1. EDITOR'S NOTE: High Stakes In Europe

Business and government users don't like to be early adopters.
They'd much rather invest in technology that's already in
widespread use, rather than take chances on deploying new
technology that's relatively untried in the real world.

That's why eyes in the Linux community are turned to Europe,
where several governments are deploying Linux.

In Germany recently, the Brandenberg Cabinet, a regional
governing body, approved a five-year plan that called open source
"modern and innovative."

Separately, Munich decided to gradually migrate 14,000 computers
from Microsoft to Linux. The $42 million project is scheduled for
completion in 2009.

And in Bergen, Norway, government officials decided to put SuSE
Linux Enterprise Server 8 on servers, replacing Windows and Unix.

If those deployments prove successful, they'll add a great deal
of momentum to open source in the enterprise.

And if they fail, open source could be dealt a blow from which it
will never recover.
